It was a real waste, thought Doc Jenkins, chuckling to himself. The Ultimate Man possessed some mysterious magnetic charm where women were concerned, but never took advantage of his power. Obviously, he felt a crime-fighting career was nothing for a woman to get mixed up in. Probably, he was right.

Miss Higgins bade Prince Zarkon a reluctant goodbye, and left with many a backward look. Zarkon, who had been looking uncomfortable and embarrassed in the attractive redhead’s presence, now seemed relieved. He virtually breathed a sigh of relief once the pretty girl had left the house!

“Guess we’re all ready, chief,” grinned Ace Harrigan.

“Then let’s get going! I have no doubt there will be new cases waiting for us when we get back to Knickerbocker City,” said the Man of Mysteries.

Scorchy and Nick Naldini were quarreling loudly as they all went trooping out of the mansion and down to the airfield where their plane was waiting, fueled and ready.

“You phony vaudeville ham, you scared her off with all that leering and hand kissing!” complained Scorchy. “If you hadn’t been around all the time, I bet I coulda got a date.”

“You pea-brained pugilist, it was you who was in the way,” snarled the magician. “I tell you, she was giving me the glad eye, but you queered the deal.”

“Oh, yeah? You tank-town Houdini, I’ll curl yer mustache for ya!”

“You and what other twelve pugs, you Gaelic goon?”

“Boy, we better find some more action quick, before those two tear into each other,” breathed Doc Jenkins to his chief.

The Nemesis of Evil smiled but said nothing.
